The Fairtrade Foundation organise Fair Trade Fortnight every year, and this year it is from Monday 28th February to Sunday 13th March. The theme is to show off the Fairtrade label, and here on Arran we are asking all primary school children to design or decorate a triangular bunting made from fair trade cotton. It is a call for justice - specifically for West African cotton farmers.

The idea is to attempt to break the Guiness World Record in Bunting which stands at 2,696 metres. FTF aim is to make 4,350 metres of Fairtrade cotton bunting. It will all be hung up on World Fair Trade Day Saturday 8th May. To achieve this they need 12,500 decorated flags - one for each Fairtrade cotton farmer in Mali and Burkina Faso in West Africa.

We've been busy at Lochranza Distillery open day, and supporting the runners of the Shiskine half marathon (in the form of moral encouragement, and Fairtrade goody bags to keep them nourished!). There are no photos of the brave runners, but here's our man at the Distillery open day!

The Arran Fairtrade group took part in the national ‘Fairtrade Fortnight' campaign which followed the theme ‘The Big Swap’.
The idea is to encourage people to think about swapping their usual brands for fairtrade ones when they do their shopping. This action reflects the urgency of expanding Fairtrade to benefit more farmers and their dependents in developing countries.

These images from the Arran Schools Fairtrade Fortnight poster competition depict the Primary and Secondary school winners and their entries.

So what is Fairtrade?

The Fairtrade system seeks to ensure fairer terms of trade for disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries. The rules and practices of International trade are biased in favour of the rich and powerful companies.  Fairtrade helps to redress the balance.
